NEW DELHI: Team Anna member Kiran Bedi — who has been accused of claiming full business class airfares from companies and institutions hosting her while travelling at 75% discount in economy class courtesy her gallantry award — has said she did not personally benefit from the measure and the money went to her NGO.
"Business class travel is part of the invitation/entitlement from the event organisers/corporates I'm asked to speak at,'' she told a news conference in the Capital on Thursday, after a newspaper reported in detail about her practice. "Travelling economy is a choice despite entitlement only to ensure that savings remain with the NGO. No personal gain here.'' Kiran Bedi claimed that she took these steps with the concurrence of her hosts. "I downgrade myself sometimes,'' she said, adding that her hosts tell her that how she chooses to spend the fare they assign to her ticket should be her personal decision.

Kiran Bedi maintained the savings accruing from the practice were deposited in the NGO she heads, India Vision Foundation. "Sorry to disappoint detractors trying real hard to find a smoking gun. However I accept this kind of coverage as a part of the challenges which being in public life poses,'' Bedi said.
Congress, which has been attacked by Team Anna, used the allegations to take a dig at Bedi. AICC General Secretary Digvijaya Singh said the charges were serious and merited probe. Law Minister Salman Khurshid, however, said, "I don't find myself equipped or able to pronounce judgement on anybody like the way judgement has been passed on many of us by the movement in which Kiran Bedi has a role. I don't think we should condemn anyone unheard," he said.Bedi said she had explained her stand to Anna Hazare, who is on a maun vrat. She said she had also spoken to another key member of Team Anna, Arvind Kejriwal, about the controversy.

Keep media out of lokpal purview, says Editors Guild

The Editors Guild of India on Friday favoured keeping the media out of the purview of the proposed anti-corruption watchdog, the Lokpal. A three-member team of the apex body of editors, which appeared before the parliamentary panel examining the Lokpal bill, stated that media in the

country was broadly a "private body" and could not be covered by the anti-corruption watchdog.   The Guild was represented by its president TN Ninan, general secretary Coomi Kapoor and treasurer Suresh Bafna in the meeting with the parliamentary standing committee on law and justice.
Many MPs cutting across party lines, including those in the committee, have been demanding bringing the media and NGOs under the ambit of the proposed Lokpal.
In the meeting, some members are understood to have told the Guild representatives that there is no demand to bring the "news content" under the Lokpal, but only the "business content", since media houses also buy assets likes land for their infrastructure.
Committee chairman Abhishek Singhvi is learnt to have stated that the Guild members put across their views "clearly and proactively."
As many as 21 other organisations and individuals were also invited to appear before the committee on Friday, to state their views on the Lokpal issue.

BJP should come clean with their stand on Lokpal: Team Anna

The battle for a strong Lokpal Bill seems to have become a question of who will blink first as Anna Hazare’s fast entered the fifth day on Saturday, with the government showing no signs initiating dialogue with Team Anna. The activists said that if the government wants, it can pass a strong Lokpal bill within a week, and voiced their disappointment with Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) for not clarifying its stand on the Jan Lokpal Bill.

Meanwhile, the Parliamentary Standing committee on Personnel, Public grievances, Law and Justice, which is to suggest amendments to the Lokpal Bill, has published advertisements in leading newspapers, seeking ideas and suggestions on the bill. Team Anna criticised the ad, calling it a “diversionary tactic.” A key member of Anna’s group, Arvind Kejriwal, asked the standing committee to reject government’s weak Lokpal bill and not “waste time” on it.

Anti-corruption activist and former top cop Kiran Bedi said, “Had government been serious about public opinion on the issue, they would have printed the provisions of the Jan Lokpal Bill along with that of the government’s bill so that an informed debate could take place.” The activists also took a dig at the standing committee’s composition stating that since it has politicians like Lalu Yadav and Amar Singh, allegedly involved in corruption, it can enjoy the benefit of their ‘experience’.

On allegations that their fast is being backed by BJP/RSS or America, Anna Hazare said those saying so “should be sent to a mental hospital. Tomorrow they may say that Pakistan is backing us.” Team Anna went on to criticise the BJP for not making public their stand on the Lokpal bill.

“Nine political parties, including the left parties, have openly come out against the government’s Lokpal bill but the BJP has not done so … we are disappointed with them, they should make their stand clear,” said Arvind Kejriwal.

In the morning, the Prime Minister Manmohan Singh said they are also in favour of a strong Lokpal, but there should be scope for give and take.

In another development, National Advisory Council (NAC) member Aruna Roy on Saturday said Anna Hazare was “ill-advised” as there was still scope for the civil society group to change the government’s version of Lokpal Bill. Roy said the National Campaign for People’s Right to Information (NCPRI), with which she is associated, has prepared a version of Lokpal Bill and would present it before the government.

On Friday, Team Anna had said that the Jan Lokpal bill should be passed as soon as possible but soon questions were raised on the feasibility of the entire process. Former union law minister Shanti Bhushan said this can be done.

“The government’s Lokpal bill can be withdrawn and the Jan Lokpal Bill can then be introduced on Tuesday in Lok Sabha, after which it can be discussed at length by the MPs over the next two days. The bill could be then sent to the Rajya Sabha, and by August 29-30, the discussions can be concluded and the bill may be passed,” said Bhushan.

Meanwhile, compared to Friday, the crowd nearly doubled at the Ramlila Maidan on Saturday. By evening, a sea of supporters were waving the tricolour, raising slogans and cheering continuously.

Support also continued to pour in, with organisations like the Bhartiya Kisaan Union joining the movement. But it was not only organisaitons that came out in support; teachers, government servants and families brought water packets, food, and biscuits for people camping at the place.

अग्निवेश टीम अन्ना से अलग हुए

अभी टीम अन्ना की ओर से स्वामी अग्निवेश के अलग होने पर कोई ख़बर नहीं आई है

टीम अन्ना के एक प्रमुख सदस्य स्वामी अग्निवेश ने कुछ मतभेदों की वजह के बाद अपने आपको टीम की गतिविधियों से अपने आपको अलग कर लिया है.

बीबीसी से हुई बातचीत में उन्होंने कहा है कि चूंकि अन्ना हज़ारे अपना अनशन ख़त्म नहीं कर रहे हैं और उन्होंने ड्रिप लेने से इनकार कर दिया है इसलिए वे अपने आपको अलग कर रहे हैं क्योंकि सिद्धांतों के अनुसार वे आमरण अनशन के साथ ख़ड़े नहीं रह सकते.

वैसे उन्होंने अपने कुछ मित्रों से ये भी कहा है कि अन्ना हज़ारे का आंदोलन सामाजिक न्याय से सहमत नहीं है इसलिए वे अपने आपको इससे अलग कर रहे हैं.

हालांकि उन्होंने इस बात से इनकार किया कि टीम अन्ना में कोई दरार पड़ गई है. उनका कहना है कि 'सदस्यों के बीच छोटी-मोटी बातों को लेकर मतभेद हैं लेकिन इसे दरार नहीं कहा जाना चाहिए क्योंकि इस समय आंदोलन अच्छा चल रहा है'.

अन्ना का रवैया

अन्ना कह रहे हैं कि वे अपनी अंतरात्मा की आवाज़ सुन रहे हैं, वे सरकार से कह रहे हैं कि जनता की आवाज़ सुनो और ख़ुद जनता की आवाज़ सुनने की जगह अंतरात्मा की आवाज़ सुन रहे हैं

स्वामी अग्निवेश का कहना है कि पहले ये सहमति बनी थी कि अगर सरकार ये मान जाती है कि जन लोकपाल बिल को कुछ संशोधनों से साथ संसद में पेश कर दिया जाए तो उतने पर अन्ना को अपना अनशन समाप्त कर देना चाहिए.

उनका कहना है कि अन्ना अब कह रहे हैं कि वे तब तक अपना अनशन जारी रखेंगे जब तक सरकार बिल पारित नहीं कर देती.

स्वामी अग्निवेश का कहना है, "उनका स्वास्थ्य बिगड़ रहा है लेकिन उन्होंने ड्रिप लेने से भी इनकार कर दिया है. वो एक रास्ता था जिससे अनशन भी चलता रहता और स्वास्थ्य भी संभल जाता."

उन्होंने कहा, "अन्ना ने अपने समर्थकों से कहा कि अगर पुलिस पकड़ने के लिए आए तो रास्ता बंद कर देना, मुझे ले जाने मत देना. ये तो अन्ना के भी सिद्धांतों के ख़िलाफ़ है."

उनका कहना है कि अन्ना ने पहले कहा था अगर पुलिस गिरफ़्तार करने आएगी तो वे प्रतिरोध नहीं करेंगे.

पहले अनशन से ही टीम अन्ना के सदस्य रहे स्वामी अग्निवेश ने बीबीसी से कहा है कि उन्होंने आरंभ में ही कह दिया था कि वे आमरण अनशन के पक्ष में नहीं हैं और अब चूंकि परिस्थितियाँ प्रतिकूल हैं इसलिए वे अलग हो रहे हैं.

उनका कहना था, "अन्ना कह रहे हैं कि वे अपनी अंतरात्मा की आवाज़ सुन रहे हैं, वे सरकार से कह रहे हैं कि जनता की आवाज़ सुनो और ख़ुद जनता की आवाज़ सुनने की जगह अंतरात्मा की आवाज़ सुन रहे हैं."

हालांकि कुछ लोगों से उन्होंने कहा है कि वे सामाजिक न्याय के मुद्दे पर अलग हो रहे हैं.

Is RSS running the Anna show?

The bulk of support to crusader Anna Hazare is coming from the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) youth cadres. It is not an allegation by the Congress but an open admission by senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Sushma Swaraj.

She attacked Home Minister P Chidambaram in the Lok Sabha on Wednesday during a debate on the Hazare episode, the text of which was released on Thursday, for getting agitated for the RSS involvement in the people's movement launched by the crusader for a strong and effective Lokpal to curb corruption.

Asserting that there should be no doubt about the RSS role in Hazare's crusade, she pointed out that the RSS is a part of India Against Corruption movement, the body under whose banner he is agitating for a strong Lokpal Bill. She pointed out that the RSS is not extending any secret support but officially mobilising support through Youth against Corruption, an arm of the RSS student wing, Akhil Bhartiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP).

"Why do the police not take any action when separatists from Kashmir come and make seditious speeches in Delhi? You protect their human rights. But if a sadhu in saffron or a Gandhian supported by the RSS comes to protest in Delhi, you start raining batons on them. I want to know why people get agitated by the mere mention of the RSS," she asked, asserting that the RSS is a nationalist organisation.

She wanted all to know the political clout the RSS wields in the country, though being an unregistered "cultural organisation." She pointed out that "116 MPs in this House and 45 members of the Upper House owe allegiance to the RSS while seven chief ministers of various states are also committed to the RSS."

"Do you still believe the RSS does not have support in the country? Why is the government then getting so agitated and upset if a people's movement is supported by the RSS," she asked.

CEOs, banks, firms in list of donors put up on website of Hazare movement

Some of the high-profile donors to Anna Hazare’s India Against Corruption movement include Vallabh Bhansali-promoted Enam Securities, now a subsidiary of Axis Bank, Nimesh Kampani’s JM Financial Foundation, Eicher Goodearth Trust, and Sitaram Jindal, promoter of the Rs 650-crore Jindal Aluminium Ltd, according to a list of donors put up on the movement’s official website.

HDFC Bank and Jammu & Kashmir Bank too have made small contributions, according to the list.

As on April 13, the movement received donations of Rs 82.87 lakh, according to the statement of receipts and expenditure put up on www.indiaagainstcorruption.org.

The expenditure statement shows that about Rs 32.69 lakh has been spent so far on activities including the January 30 rally, indefinite fast in April and preparatory work.

The movement was started among others by Hazare, Swami Ramdev, Sri Sri Ravishankar, Mahmood Madani and Swami Agnivesh. Hazare had gone on an indefinite fast on April 5 demanding that the government enact the movement’s version of the Jan Lokpal Bill. He ended the fast after 98 hours, after the government notified a 10-member joint committee of ministers and activists to draft a new Lokpal Bill.

The first meeting of the joint drafting committee will be held on Saturday. Civil society members of the panel will declare their assets and liablities tomorrow, PTI reported.

According to the statement of receipts and expenditure, almost half the amount spent by the movement — over Rs 16 lakh — was on “telecom” and “printing”, and about a third — Rs 9.47 lakh — on “tents, bed, sound system and hall booking”. The movement was left with a balance of Rs 50 lakh as on April 13.

Among the high-profile CEOs who have been listed as donors are Sanjeev Bikhchandani of naukri.com, Romesh Sobti, CEO and MD of IndusInd Bank, and Harbachan Singh Bawa, vice-chairman of Zuari Industries.

CII stands firm in fight against corruption

Welcoming the agreement reached between the government and the movement being led by Anna Hazare, Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) President Hari Bhartia said that the CII has always stood for integrity, transparency and clean conduct of every transaction that happens in the country.

Giving primacy to the issue, CII has also set up a Special Committee under the Chairmanship of Adi Godrej, Chairman, Godrej Group to ensure that Indian industry can be galvanized on this issue to ensure that the Industry can do its part in ensuring that corruption is dealt with comprehensively in the country. CII stands firm on fight against corruption and therefore, welcomes the developments of the last one week, Bhartia said.

Echoing his thoughts, B Muthuraman, President – Designate, CII said that there are examples within the Indian corporate sector of how businesses can be conducted without having to succumb to the pressures of resorting to unfair and corrupt practices, and yet be competitive. He said that it is fortunate that in India there are enough people within and outside the government, industry and civil society, who recognize corruption as being the single largest scourge affecting the country and therefore, a cathartic movement is taking place with spontaneous support from all sections of society.

Muthuraman added that it is indeed fortunate that India is recognizing the issue in time for it to be dealt with. This is in a way better than what the situation is in many developed and emerging economies, which seem to be in denial.
