It is unbelievable that man of your stature does not understand that society is not of individual beings but it is aggregate of individuals who are woven in various forms of interactions with other social groups. Your family may believe in regional identities but unravel that and you see you all have caste, even though you may not like it. Your wife is Bengali- Brahmin, and your daughter in law, who you may refer as Manglorean is Bunt.

Census is an administrative and political process, it is extremely important for marginalized and socially oppressed groups to be accounted according to their population size,as they are constitutional categories.

If you believe that you are in a position to influence common masses please go ahead but also remember that some of them may be from the Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribes. It is important that they register themselves accordingy. Alongwith them there are other backward classes, who need to be registered.

So why should you oppose a measure which is rooted in a welfare framework , maybe your family does not need it but there are others who need it, so please stop being Indian (and aint you more of Hindu, with 10 different stones, and threads). Being Indian is also respecting constitution of India, have you ever read constitution of india. It also promotes scientific temper, it is better that you say you are promoter of irrational/nationalist notions without any substance. I am Indian first, like you, but I also have caste/social location. Why dont you accept a social fact, base of our society.

Cant expect this from you. You are a pseudo Indian, did you get any time to say few good words about Dr Ambedkar on 14th April? You paid your condolence to Polish PM but not to the man who addressed religious/institutional inequalities that had suppressed a quarter of India’s population.

So Mr Indian, you can mask your identity, not your caste, are you really alien to caste realites of India?

From the morning a consensus on the census. Officials from the BMC, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation, troop into Prateeksha to detail in on information, that shall for the first time in India develop for every citizen the UID - a unique identity card. All kinds of information is sought name, place, age, dependents, place of birth, house, residence years and on …. I wait for them to come to the crucial controversial one … caste. They don’t. Wary of the sensitivity that this has raised recently by politicians, they keep away from it. They reason that they would wait for some government decision on this.

I tell them irrespective of what the system decides, my answer is ready - caste, Indian. My Father never believed in caste and neither do any of us. He married a Sikh, I married a Bengali, my brother a Sindhi, my daughter a Punjabi, my son a Mangalorean … in his autobiography he had expressed that future generations of his family should marry into different parts of the country. So far that tradition has been kept alive !!
